“Paris calling”

A year of protest in the French capital.

Arc-de-tri_GJ

From the French Revolution to the workers' protests of May ‘68, Paris has always been at the very heart of French movements striving for greater social justice and equality.

Following the demonstrations for over one year, I tried to capture the rebellious spirit of Paris and its beauty, which is seen not only in the Eiffel Tower or the Louvre, but above all in its inhabitants, always ready to stand together to preserve their fundamental rights.

Its citizens flock almost weekly into the city’s majestic boulevards to draw attention to their discontent and give voice to their aspirations. From the defence of women’s and minority rights to the trade union movement, the revolutionary soul of the city is represented below in four photographic galleries named after the slogans used during the marches.

- An uncertain future.

24/11/2020 - While public attention is monopolised by the health pandemic, the French National Assembly is currently examining a controversial bill called "Global Security”. The proposed law would restrict the freedom of citizens and journalists to film and publish images of law enforcement officials.

The controversial article 24 includes heavy penalties (up to one-year imprisonment and a fine of 45,000 euros) for broadcasting videos in which police officers are identifiable “with the aim of causing physical or psychological harm”.

If adopted, the new law will not only obstruct the work of journalists, but also impede citizens from providing evidence of police violence.
